How we vet products

Detox Home is an independent editorial project, not a marketplace. Brands cannot buy placement. Before we recommend a product, we look past broad claims such as “clean,” “green,” or “non-toxic” and focus on the materials, coatings, fibers, fills, ingredients, and certifications that matter for how the product is actually used.

Our work is based on information available from manufacturers, current labels and product pages, certification databases, and public regulatory sources — not laboratory testing. A recommendation reflects the information disclosed at the time we reviewed it; it is not a promise that a product is risk-free or right for every person. See our disclaimer for the full boundary.

Where we look

Product detailsIngredient lists, fiber percentages, food-contact materials, fills, finishes, coatings, and the parts included with the exact model.

Manufacturer sourcesCurrent product pages, care instructions, technical specifications, manuals, and other model-specific documentation.

Independent sourcesCertification databases and public regulatory information when they answer a relevant question about the exact product.

What we check

The standard changes by category. For food-contact products, we identify the part that touches food and require its material to be named; vague claims such as “BPA-free” or “premium materials” are not substitutes. For textiles, we check fiber content, backing, fill, and relevant finishes. For personal care, we review the disclosed formulation rather than relying on front-label claims. For furniture and mattresses, we look for named substrates, foams, adhesives, finishes, and flame-barrier materials.

How certifications are used

Certifications can strengthen a record, but only when the specific product’s certification is documented. We do not infer a certification from marketing copy, a brand reputation, or an unrelated model. A certification also answers only the questions covered by its scope; it is evidence, not a blanket safety seal.

Changes and corrections

Products change. We revisit recommendations when a formulation or model changes, a source disappears, or a reader reports a discrepancy. If you spot a change or mistake, use the contact page so we can verify it and correct the site.
