We look for lasting construction and lower-emission finishes, including what lies beneath a veneer.  Any structural plastic is disclosed.  A dining or coffee table's finish is also different from a cutting-board finish: use appropriate dishes or boards rather than assuming the tabletop is designed for direct food preparation.
