The route from reservoir to cup matters as much as the carafe.  We look at the reservoir, filter holder, tubing and lid, excluding plastic wherever it touches water or coffee.  Manual brewers offer a simple option; automatic machines must meet the same standard inside, not just look like metal appliances outside.
