Entertaining

Serving boards, trays and table pieces in glass, steel, ceramic and wood instead of plastic.

Food may rest on a serving tray for hours, so the finish deserves as much attention as the main material.  We look for food-appropriate wood finishes and evidence about ceramic glazes, and exclude plastic wherever it touches food.  Decorative pieces are not assumed to be serving dishes.

Fiesta Bistro Coupe Ceramic Serving Bowl — Turquoise, 68 oz Fiesta Bistro Coupe Ceramic Serving Bowl — Turquoise, 68 oz CERAMICUSA PRODUCTION Why we recommend it: A roomy ceramic bowl for salads, pasta and shared side dishes, with no plastic liner or separate base.  Fiesta makes it in West Virginia and reports independent laboratory testing for lead and cadmium leaching from its glazes.  That is useful testing evidence, not a promise of zero trace metals.  The smooth bowl is dishwasher-safe and stacks for storage. Materials: vitrified ceramic · turquoise glaze $32.94★ 4.8 · 400+ ratings View on Amazon
Fiesta Ceramic Gravy Sauceboat — Peony, 18.5 oz Fiesta Ceramic Gravy Sauceboat — Peony, 18.5 oz CERAMICUSA PRODUCTION Why we recommend it: The ceramic spout and handle let you serve warm gravy or dressing without a plastic pouring insert.  Its raised foot keeps the bowl easy to lift at the table.  Made in West Virginia, with a dishwasher-safe glaze.  Fiesta publishes outside-laboratory results for lead and cadmium leaching; these do not establish zero metal content in the finished ceramic. Materials: vitrified ceramic · peony glaze $36.46★ 4.8 · 300+ ratings View on Amazon
Fiesta Extra-Large Ceramic Covered Butter Dish — White Fiesta Extra-Large Ceramic Covered Butter Dish — White CERAMICUSA PRODUCTION Why we recommend it: Both the tray and lift-off cover are glazed ceramic, so butter never rests against a plastic base or lid.  The extra-large shape accommodates wider butter portions, and both pieces can go in the dishwasher.  Made in West Virginia.  Fiesta reports outside-laboratory checks of lead and cadmium leaching; the results are not a guarantee of zero trace metals. Materials: vitrified ceramic · white glaze $44.99★ 4.8 · 700+ ratings View on Amazon
Alessi Foix Stainless-Steel Serving Tray — 44 cm Alessi Foix Stainless-Steel Serving Tray — 44 cm STAINLESS STEEL Why we recommend it: Made in Italy from 18/10 stainless steel, this wide serving tray offers a reusable alternative to plastic platters.  Its flat center holds drinks or appetizers, while the rippled rim adds a decorative touch without a painted finish on the selected steel version.  The mirror polish can scratch, so use a soft sponge and dry it after washing. Materials: 18/10 stainless steel $160.23★ 4.7 · 100+ ratings View on Amazon
La Rochère Bee Glass Pitcher, 34 oz La Rochère Bee Glass Pitcher, 34 oz GLASS Why we recommend it: A glass handle and formed pouring lip let you serve drinks without a plastic spout or liner.  The 34-ounce pitcher has a wide opening that is easier to reach for washing than a narrow-necked carafe.  Made in France; La Rochère states that its glassware is lead- and cadmium-free.  Dishwasher safe, but avoid sudden temperature changes. Materials: pressed clear glass · glass handle and pouring lip $45.00★ 4.7 · 500+ ratings View on Amazon
Alessi 9096 Stainless-Steel Creamer — Light Blue, 200 mL Alessi 9096 Stainless-Steel Creamer — Light Blue, 200 mL STAINLESS STEEL Why we recommend it: Milk or cream touches 18/10 stainless steel in this small, open-top pitcher; the blue polyamide-plastic handle stays outside.  Its wide base and short spout suit table service, and the open bowl is easy to rinse after use.  Holds 200 mL, so it is a serving piece rather than a milk-storage container.  Hand-wash to preserve the finish. Materials: 18/10 stainless steel · polyamide plastic (exterior handle) $80.25★ 4.5 · 100+ ratings View on Amazon
Andrew Pearce Cherry Round Serving Platter — 16 Inch Andrew Pearce Cherry Round Serving Platter — 16 Inch Why we recommend it: This 16-inch cherry platter gives shared snacks and appetizers a wooden serving surface finished with refined walnut oil, rather than a plastic tray.  Its shallow rim helps keep food on the platter without making it awkward to reach.  Hand-turned in Vermont, it needs hand washing, prompt drying and occasional oiling—not dishwasher cleaning. Materials: cherry hardwood · refined walnut oil finish $220.00 View product
HF Coors American Modern Ceramic Serving Platter — Matte White HF Coors American Modern Ceramic Serving Platter — Matte White CERAMIC Why we recommend it: This long ceramic platter replaces a plastic serving tray for shared appetizers or roasted vegetables.  Its matte-white glaze is identified by HF Coors as lead- and cadmium-free, and the company reports annual independent testing of its dinnerware.  Made in Tucson, it can go in the microwave and dishwasher; avoid sudden temperature changes. Materials: vitrified ceramic · matte white glaze $129.00 View product
La Rochère Ouessant Glass Butter and Jam Dish La Rochère Ouessant Glass Butter and Jam Dish GLASS Why we recommend it: Butter or jam rests in glass under a matching glass cover, so the serving surface and lid do not need plastic.  The ribbed Ouessant design is sized for a small portion at breakfast or an individual place setting—not a whole standard butter stick.  This French-made dish is dishwasher safe.  Its loose-fitting cover is for covered serving, not airtight or shelf-stable food storage. Materials: clear glass base · ribbed glass cover $24.00 View product
Riess Gmundner Floral Enamel Pouring Jug, 0.7 L Riess Gmundner Floral Enamel Pouring Jug, 0.7 L ENAMEL Why we recommend it: The shaped spout pours milk, warm sauces or drinks directly from enamel, with no plastic insert in the liquid path.  This small rounded jug is handmade in Austria and has a plain interior with floral decoration outside.  It can warm liquids on a suitably small burner as well as serve them at the table.  The enamel-coated handle still gets hot; a lid is optional and sold separately. Materials: porcelain enamel over iron $72.00 View product
Simon Pearce Hartland Glass Cake Plate and Dome Set — Large Simon Pearce Hartland Glass Cake Plate and Dome Set — Large GLASSUSA PRODUCTION Why we recommend it: A glass dome covers cakes or pastries without a plastic lid, and the pedestal plate keeps the serving surface glass as well.  Both pieces are handmade in the USA.  The set is for displaying and serving food; the cover is not an airtight seal or a substitute for refrigeration.  Avoid hot food and sudden temperature changes. Materials: uncoated glass cake plate · glass dome and knob $630.00 View product
Simon Pearce Norwich Glass Ice Bucket — Medium Simon Pearce Norwich Glass Ice Bucket — Medium GLASSUSA PRODUCTION Why we recommend it: Norwich holds serving ice against glass, without a plastic bucket liner.  Its scrolled handles and weighted base make the 52-ounce vessel practical for the table, and the body and handles are handmade in the USA.  This is an open, non-insulated ice bucket, so expect melting rather than cooler-like performance; do not pre-chill it in the freezer. Materials: uncoated glass body, base and handles $185.00 View product
