Low-VOC paint

Low- and zero-VOC paint options, with preference given to independent emissions testing.

Paint can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into indoor air.  We consider the base and colorant and give preference to independent emissions testing.  A zero-VOC label does not guarantee zero emissions.  Follow ventilation and drying instructions even when choosing a lower-VOC paint.

Nordicare Refined Linseed Oil Wood Finish — 2.5 L Nordicare Refined Linseed Oil Wood Finish — 2.5 L Why we recommend it: This single-ingredient wood finish uses refined linseed oil without added solvents or synthetic resins.  It brings out the grain of bare solid-wood furniture and can warm the color of pale woods.  Wipe off excess oil and allow at least 24 hours between coats; it is not an odor-free or instant-curing finish.  Follow the label’s oily-rag precautions to prevent spontaneous ignition. Materials: 100% refined linseed oil $40.50★ 4.6 · 1,000+ ratings View on Amazon
Real Milk Paint Hemp Oil Wood Finish — 32 fl oz Real Milk Paint Hemp Oil Wood Finish — 32 fl oz Why we recommend it: Cold-pressed hempseed oil is thin enough to use without an added solvent, bringing a soft matte finish to lightly used furniture and milk-painted wood.  It offers less water resistance than tung oil.  The supplier lists USA manufacture; the maker’s older safety sheet names Canada for the oil, while current seed sourcing is unspecified.  Allow the full cure before washing, and follow the label’s precautions for oily cloths. Materials: 100% cold-pressed hempseed oil $44.95★ 4.6 · 300+ ratings View on Amazon
